Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says an NYPD desk sergeant has been placed on modified duty after a man was found hanging in a Bronx stationhouse last week.

Samuel Reyes died on Friday, just days after he was found unconscious and unresponsive in a holding cell at the 49th Precinct stationhouse.

Police say he used a piece of cloth from a robe he was wearing to hang himself.

Bratton says the desk sergeant who was on duty that night was responsible for watching Reyes.

NYPD guidelines say officers are required to check on prisoners every 15 minutes.

Officers are also supposed to remove any sort of clothing that could be used in a hanging.

Police say Reyes was a suspect in two armed robberies.
