A day after being given a cease-and-desist letter by New York's attorney general, FanDuel says it will keep the fantasy sports site operating in the state.

FanDuel's CEO is encouraging New York's 500,000 users to keep playing.

On Tuesday, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman ordered FanDuel and DraftKings to stop accepting what it calls illegal bets in the state.

The websites allow users to create online fantasy teams to compete and win money in contests against other users.

Schneiderman says an investigation into the sites show their contests are illegal gambling.

He says they're based on chance, not skill.

New Yorkers NY1 spoke with had mixed reactions.

"If they have to, if they saying it's illegal, it's illegal there has to be something that will cause them to get to that point," one said.

"I think gambling is a personal choice," said another. "I think if people want to gamble at their own risk and own peril then I don't think the government should control it."

DraftKings says it will challenge the ruling.

Both sites have five days to prove that their operations are lawful.
