Volunteers in Astoria helped give a century old school a new look, over the weekend.

Residents, from across the city, showed up at P.S. 85 in Astoria on Saturday to help beautify the property.

It was all part of New York Cares Day which is held across the five boroughs each year.

Participants painted the school's gate and revitalized the garden.

Volunteers also organized classrooms and painted murals for the school's library.

"When the environment is run down and there's not, you know, a lot of color, it's easy to see their imagination run away with them. So, to keep it into the classroom, seeing all these bright colors, all these murals, it's really great,” said volunteer Carol Issa.

In all, 69 schools were beautified across the city on Saturday.
