If you heard cheers followed by a sea of people dressed in pink, you probably stumbled upon the AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer. It is taking place throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn this weekend. NY1’s Bree Driscoll filed the following report.

Pink leg warmers, pink sneakers and pink glasses - all on display to raise awareness of breast cancer.

They were accompanied by pink gloves, scarves and hats to help battle the drop in temperatures Saturday.

"Yeah it was a little chilly but perfect for walking," said one walker.

"It is actually perfect for a walk,” said another walker. “It is not too hot.  It was a little chilly this morning down by the water but it has warmed up and once you start walking you warm up."

Despite the cold, more than 3,000 walkers headed out on their two-day, 39-mile walk as part of the 13th annual AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer.

Karen Bdera walks with more than 270 names attached to her tutu.

"I ask all of my donors who support me to give me names of people they want me to walk in honor and memory of,” Bdera said. “What I have on here right now is 111 people who have succumbed to breast cancer and 160 people who are either fighting it now or have fought it successfully."

Even a so-called pregnant man walked this year.

"My wife and I do the walk typically,” Isaac Levin said. “She wasn't cleared medically. She is 25 weeks pregnant now. So with that I am walking for three of us."

Walkers say the comradery and team spirit is what keeps them moving.

"It is like a giant two day slumber party,” Bdera said. “I don't know how else to call it. We also sometimes call it Lilith Fair without the music."

Over the last 13 years, the walk has had more than 207,000 participants and raised more than $550 million.

"The money raised through AVON 39 gets divided up by the Avon Foundation for Women and it goes to organizations that help men and woman regardless of their ability to pay, get the medical care that they need,” says Jill Surdyka, National Ambassador for AVON39. “That can include everything from a mobile mammography van for somebody who doesn't have insurance and needs a mammogram or putting food on the table from someone who is undergoing chemotherapy and needs to feed their children."
