A North Shore plant is now a whole lot greener thanks to a project from the Department of Environmental Protection.

The agency invested $30 million to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Port Richmond Waste Water Treatment Plant.

They installed three new boilers, a more efficient exhaust system and more than 5,000 rooftop solar panels.

That means greenhouse gases will be reduced by more than 28,000 metric tons, which is the same as taking nearly 6,000 cars off the road each year.

"It's providing benefits in terms of helping to minimize the cost of energy and the cost of developing the infrastructure for everyone in and around this area," said Jorge Lopez, President & CEO of ConEdison Solutions.

"We have goals to reduce the amount of power that we use, to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and to just make our facility more sustainable," Vincent Sapienza, Deputy Commissioner, DEP stated.

ConEdison Solutions and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services installed the panels.

They say it's the second largest project of its kind in the city.
