Police are investigating after officers shot a man in Bushwick early Friday morning. NY1’s Erin Clarke has the story.

Witnesses say it sounded like the Wild West this morning in Bushwick.

"It smelled. The gunfire was like wafting in the air. It was so much," said local resident Lauren Caulk. "It was very scary. We like rolled off the bed and were like stay down."

Caulk said she counted about 45 shots in an exchange of gunfire between police and a 27-year-old man they say shot another man a few blocks away at 1266 Madison Street earlier Friday morning.

When police confronted the suspect on Jefferson Avenue near Bushwick Avenue, he opened fire and hit their unmarked cruiser.

After a chase on foot, the suspect was shot in the calf by police, and a .40 caliber handgun recovered from the scene.

"I saw about 15 police officers shooting in that direction. I didn't see anybody that they were chasing. Then I saw a cop releasing his clip at the corner of Jefferson Avenue toward that direction," said Sheila Fairweather, another local resident.

The early morning shooting startled residents of a usually quiet neighborhood they say had become safer over the last few years.

"Ten years ago it was dangerous. Now I feel more safe. Last night I was surprised that this happened," one woman said.

"The neighborhood is pretty nice. It's different now. Different people have moved into the neighborhood. It's getting better. It's getting prettier and better and comfortable. But it's still very scary," said another.

Police say the suspect in the shooting was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition for the gunshot wound to his leg.

The man he shot was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition as well.

Four police officers were treated for ringing in the ears.

Police say the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
