Following Pope Francis' departure from New York City, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton is praising the department's efforts during the pope's historic visit.

In a memo to the department, Bratton wrote: "In a day and a half, we shepherded history. This was a momentous papal visit combined with the presence of an unprecedented number of world leaders. It could not have happened without you and your efforts. We can all take a moment, and a deep breath."

However Bratton said the department's efforts are nowhere close to being over.

He says the NYPD will have to "dig deep" to finish off what he calls an historic September.

Security measures are now in place for Sunday's annual Tunnel to Towers run honoring the response to the 9/11 attacks, as well Monday's address by President Obama to the U.N. General Assembly.
