New York's education standards are getting a name change.

Regents Chancellor Meryl Tisch says the high standards will no longer be known as the "Common Core."

Tisch announced the change on upstate radio show "the Capitol Pressroom" Tuesday.

She said in part, "There is so much politicization about those words 'Common Core.' We can call them the 'Empire State standards' or 'New York's higher standards.'"

New York was one of the first of 48 states to switch over to the learning standards.

Test scores have plummeted since the switch and the standards have gotten backlash from parents and teachers.

This year, 20 percent of students opted out of standardized tests in protest.

The state Education Department continues to stand by the standards, but admits to making mistakes in rolling them out.
