A Bronx teacher was killed in the middle of his bike trek across the country for charity after apparently being hit by a driver talking on her phone.

The non-profit organization "Bike and Build" says one of its riders, 25 year-old Patrick Wanninkhof, and his biking partner, were riding from Oklahoma to Texas when they were hit by a car.

They say Wanninkhof was pronounced dead at the scene, and his partner was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

Wanninkhof taught physics and computer science at Fordham High School for The Arts in the Bronx

He was biking as part of a fundraiser for Bike and Build, which raises money for affordable housing.

According to Bike and Build's website, Wanninkhof began his journey in June and had already completed half of his nearly 4,000-mile journey when he was killed.

A Bike and Build spokesperson said: "We are all shaken by this terrible news, and this will be a difficult time for everyone in our community."
