ROMULUS, N.Y. -- David Sweat, the escaped inmate critically shot and captured a week ago, was released from Albany Medical Center early Sunday morning and transferred to Five Points Correctional Facility in Seneca County, the state Department of Corrections said in a statement.

Sweat was being treated after State Police Sgt. Jay Cook shot him trying to flee toward a patch of woods less than two miles from the Canadian border.

Corrections officials said Sweat will remain in the Five Points infirmary for observation for at least 24 hours. Afterward, he will placed in "special housing" in a single cell, where he will remain for 23 hours a day. He will be under "active suicide watch," officials said.

The state said his cell will contain a bed, a place to write, a toilet and a sink. There's also a facility-controlled shower that will limit his movement.

News about his transfer traveled fast throughout the community, but many say it doesn’t worry them.

“It doesn’t really bother me,” Willard resident Chris Woodard said. “When he was out, he never really hurt anybody. He didn’t do anything. I’m glad they caught him. I hope he pays for what he did, but other than that, that doesn’t have no affect on me.”

Lodi resident Kristin Jennings agreed.

“It’s kind of neat because it was a big story, but other than that it’s not really a big deal,” Jennings said. "He is not getting out of the there. We actually have a lot of friends that work there, and they do a great job. He’s not getting out. He’s not going to have fun. He’s not going to have his little campfires or whatever they said they had at the other place. It’s maximum security. He’s not getting out.”

Even though the spotlight is shining on the small town now, Jennings says she expects it to fade away soon.

“In a week or two when the news blows over, it’s just going to be a non-issue,” Jennings said. “I mean, everybody will forget about him, as they should, and he’ll go back to his little life of incarceration and end of story.”

Sweat and fellow convicted killer Richard Matt escaped from Clinton County Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6.

Matt was shot and killed during a showdown with a U.S. Border Patrol tactical team on June 26.

Five Points in Romulus was opened in 2000, about 150 years after the Dannemora prison.
