The 39th annual Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show lit up the skies above the East River Saturday night as New York City residents celebrated the nation's birthday.

This was the second year in a row that the fireworks were launched from the East River. They were moved from the Hudson River last year.

The fireworks were set off from four barges near the South Street Seaport and from another barge below the Brooklyn Bridge.

Police security around town was heightened due to recent calls by the Islamic State terror group for supporters to carry out attacks around the world.  However there were no specific threats against the city, and the celebration took place without incident.
