Power has been restored to more than 700 customers affected by an outage in Upper Manhattan.

Investigators said a manhole erupted in flames around 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning on West 190th Street near Wadsworth Terrace.

Crews had to set up temporary electrical lines above ground because the damage underground was too severe.

Residents were concerned about not being able to use their air conditioning during this hot and humid day.

Con Edison is reminding customers to conserve energy by setting air conditioners to the highest comfortable temperature and running appliances early in the morning or late at night.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says New Yorkers should keep cool, but be conscious about the energy they're using.

He's urging residents to set their air conditioners to 78 degrees.

The mayor says this will keep people safe and prevent power outages around the city.

"As the temperature goes up so does energy usage, and that creates the danger of blackouts and brownouts. We do not want to see that happen in the city on any major scale, so right now there's a big strain on our electrical grid," De Blasio told reporters Wednesday.

The mayor and Con Ed are also asking New Yorkers to turn off unused appliances and lights.

City officials are urging people to drinks lots of water even if they're not thirsty.

The mayor is urging New Yorkers to limit their time outdoors, check on neighbors and pay close attention to children and the elderly.
