A summer youth employment program is a win-win for business and workers alike.

The Department of Youth and Community Development hires about 50,000 New York City teens and young adults every year to work for a six-week period.

One participating business is Greene Grape, an ice cream shop in Brooklyn.

Workers wages are paid by the city, so businesses get free labor.

The program's director, Chris Lewis, says it teaches the young employees valuable lessons about the workforce.

"For the young people the carrot is basically an oppurtunity to get work experience, paid work experience over six weeks in the summer and also get workshops and educational oppurtinities in terms of basic work readiness," Lewis said.

"They taught us how to make the sundaes, make the floats, just go through everything so when we actually start here we can just go wih our feet running," said Jana Lindsay, a program participant.
