WASHINGTON -- District and military officials held a news conference Thursday morning after reports of a shooting sent the Washington Navy Yard into lockdown.

Officials examined the area and could not find any evidence a shooting took place.

That same area did see a shooting in 2013 that left 12 people dead.

Washington D.C. police say Thursday's response came after a phone call from within a Navy Yard building around 7:30 a.m.

"I think that we tell people over and over again, see something, say something. You don't know what's going on, don't take things for granted. Make that call. Regardless of what it is, an employee thought they heard something of concern. They made a call. That's what we tell people to do," said Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier.

Despite the lack of evidence, officials do not believe this call was part of a hoax.
