A Queens neighborhood has been transformed by a massive display of graffiti and street art. But in this case, the building owners are on board. NY1's Roger Clark filed this report.

Artist Cey Adams has covered a lot of walls with his spray-painted works, and one pays tribute to his favorite baseball team: the Mets.

"People are just so amazed by that, no pun intended, you know they walk by and they just have great things to say," said Adams.

Adams is among more than 100 artists who contributed to the Welling Court Mural Project. Block after block of Astoria near 30th Ave and 12th Street now features graffiti and street art. It all started in 2009 when residents approached gallery owner Garrison Buxton to inquire about sprucing up the neighborhood.

"It was kind of tagged up and dirty and they wanted to basically create kind of an uplifting environment," said Buxton, Director of Ad Hoc Art.

It started with 44 murals and that number has now grown to 130. The artists donate their time, and in some cases materials, and other supplies are donated by local businesses. Buxton gets permission from property owners to turn their buildings into a canvas.

"Literally just going around and talking to people and that's been another great thing too, as far as getting to know the community better," said Buxton.

The artists come from around the world and from the city too, like legendary graffiti artists Lady Pink and Smith and renowned street artist John Fekner. For Cey Adams, returning to his roots in graffiti was a no-brainer.

"A lot of these artists are my friends, and so it's an opportunity for me to come out and paint and have fun and it really is like a sense of community, it's as simple as that," said Adams.

The murals have been a popular attraction, drawing folks from all around, plus neighbors who get to see them every day.

"Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful," said Astoria resident Michael Jackson.
