Police have identified the suspected gunman shot by two plainclothes detectives in East Harlem Tuesday night.

Wil Vinson Diaz, 26, is now facing charges including attempted murder, assault, and criminal weapons possession.

Investigators say it started when Diaz opened fire on a 21-year-old man on First Avenue near 101st Street around 8 p.m.

The 21-year-old was hit in the torso and leg and is expected to recover.

Two plainclothes officers witnessed the shooting and chased Diaz.

When they caught up with him, they identified themselves as police and ordered him to drop his weapon.

Police say Diaz turned his gun on the detectives. That's when one of the detectives opened fire, hitting him in the torso.

He was transported to Harlem Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

"I heard like a 'tra, tra, tra' and I was thinking it was raining again. Then my husband called because he tried to looking for parking and I said, 'Something happened at 102nd. There's a lot of police,'" said one witness at the scene.

Police say a .22 automatic was recovered at the scene.

The officers were not hurt.
