A 9-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a taxicab last year was remembered Wednesday at a street renaming ceremony in Manhattan.

Friends and family gathered at the northwest corner of 97th Street and West End Avenue, now known as Cooper Stock Way.

The boy was holding his father's hand and was walking in the crosswalk in January 2014 when he was hit.

The cab driver was fined but was not given any jail time. Cooper's mother, Dana Learner, says this renaming ceremony is bitter sweet.

"It brings the reality that he is really gone to light which is very painful, but I am very appreciative that his name will be up there to remind people that their is an epidemic in New York City of reckless driving," Learner said.

Cooper's mother worked to develop a law that toughened the penalty for TLC drivers who kill or critically injure pedestrians.

Taxi and Livery drivers involved in serious accidents can now have their licenses suspended, and permanently revoked if they are found guilty in court.
