An NYPD officer who was shot in the head over the weekend remains hospitalized as the accused gunman awaits his next court appearance.

Demetrius Blackwell, 35, is facing several charges including two counts of attempted murder.

He's being held without bail.

The NYPD says 25-year-old Officer Brian Moore and his partner pulled up to Blackwell on Saturday night when they saw him adjusting his waistband in an odd manner.

Prosecutors say Blackwell turned and fired into the car, hitting Moore in the head.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he remains listed in critical but stable condition.

PBA President Pat Lynch is asking New Yorkers to keep the officer in their thoughts.

"His colleagues by the hundreds and his family members now wait vigil hoping to get some good news. What we ask is the public along with the police officers bow their head and pray. Pray not only for Brian, but pray for his family," Lynch said.

Blackwell was caught after a short manhunt.

Police are still searching for the gun used in the shooting.

Officials say Blackwell has a criminal history and already served time in prison for attempted murder.
