Police say a crane accident is closing down several streets in Manhattan.

Officials say it happened at 261 Madison Avenue just before 11 a.m.

Authorities say the mobile crane was lifting a heavy payload when it broke free.

They say it fell about 30 stories, striking buildings on its way down.

Officials say 10 sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

"Everyone went off of the scene awake and alert and oriented. The two construction workers were taken to Bellvue the trauma center out of an over-abundance of caution. The others have been removed to NYU. Everybody is awake and stable at this time," said FDNY Assistant Chief Ron Spadafora.

"We, as I said will do a full investigation to understand what happened here, and to guard against anything like this in the future," said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

One eyewitness who sent NY1 a video of the immediate aftermath of the accident described what she experienced.

"There was a loud noise and usually there is medal plating on the ground in front of my building so we assumed it was a large vehicle that had passed over the metal plating. But after I walked by the window there was smoke and there is not supposed to be smoke so I was a little confused," witness Roxy Travers said.

We're told the following street closures are in effect:

  • Madison Avenue from East 37th Street to East 42 Street
  • 37 Street between Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue
  • 38 Street at Park Avenue
  • 40 Street between Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue
The mayor said they hope to have Madison Avenue back open by Monday morning but there are no guarantees.
