New Yorkers hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend will not be alone.

AAA expects more than 37 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more from their homes this weekend, the highest number for Memorial Day travel in 10 years.

Thirty-three million will be driving to their destinations. That's an increase of more than 5 percent from 2014.

A stronger economy and low gas prices are being credited for the travel surge.

The national average price for a gallon of regular gas is about $2.74. That's down nearly $1 compared to last Memorial Day weekend.

While most will be driving, NY1 talked to travelers at the airport, who were heading to further flung destinations. The country's 2.6 million air travelers are also enjoying slightly lower ticket prices, though the cost of lodging has increased.

"You know, New York is the concrete jungle, so to get out to the fresh air and stuff like that, can't wait to go," said one traveler.

"I am from California, so I'm looking forward to spending time with family and seeing sunshine and the beach, and it'll be wonderful," said another.

If you're staying local or within the state, the governor's office is reminding you to drive safely. Officers will be out ticketing drunk and distracted drivers during increased patrols and checkpoints.
