The Drug Enforcement Administration is celebrating a record-breaking drug bust after nearly $50 million of heroin was seized in The Bronx.

Authorities say they found over 150 pounds of heroin and $2 million in cash in an apartment on West 251st Street in the Fieldston section.

Police arrested two men, including Jose Mercedes, who allegedly brought drugs to New York from Mexico.

Officials say they're optimistic the bust will make a major impact on heroin distribution not just in the city but throughout the northeast.

"The amount that he was bringing into New York City—we believe at least on a monthly basis and maybe every two weeks—was just tremendous and there cannot be that many Jose Mercedes in New York City so this is going to make hugea dent," said Special Prosecutor Bridget Brennan.

Investigators say Mercedes' organization transported heroin to Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Police also arrested Yenci Cruz Francisco with operating as a major trafficker.
