About 25,000 people laced up their sneakers and hit the ground running in Brooklyn, for the borough's annual half marathon.

The runners took to the pavement near the Brooklyn museum, early Saturday morning.

They then ran 13.1 miles through some of the borough's hot spots, including Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Park, and Ocean Parkway.

At the finish line on the Coney Island Boardwalk, Megan Hogan was the winner for the women and Negash Abebe Duki came out on top for the men.

Runners we spoke to had different reasons for participating.

One woman says she was separated from her parents at the age of 16, and running became her outlet.

"It was very hard being away from my parents. I grew up sheltered. So I had never in my life been separated from my parents for more than a day or two. It was hard for me to adjust," she said. "I had no other coping mechanisms except running."

The race was an emotional one for the New York Road Runners CEO Mary Wittenberg, who announced her resignation this week.

"It's a big day for me. You know, it's—I'm trying not to think about it because I'll get overwhelmed with emotion because its amazing what we can do here....at New York Road runners with really helping the city get moving get running. I'm so excited for all that's ahead," Wittenberg said.

The Brooklyn Half Marathon started over 34 years ago, and since then, organizers say its become the largest half marathon in the country.
