Nepalese residents here in the city are keeping a close watch on developments back home two days after a massive earthquake struck the region.

Many have gathered at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights where a vigil has been set up.

The death toll from the quake now stands at more than 3,700.

More than a thousand people died in the capital of Kathmandu.

Tens of thousands of people have been sleeping outdoors for fear of aftershocks.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake was the worst to hit Nepal in more than 80 years.

The quake also triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest that buried a base camp filled with mountain climbers.

At least 18 people were killed in the avalanche including Google executive Dan Fredinburg, who was attempting to climb Everest.

A U.S. military plane is expected to arrive later today to assist in search and rescue efforts.
