NY1's Jeanine Ramirez got an exclusive look at the effort to Coney Island's Cyclone roller coaster back on track after it broke down last Sunday during its first run of the season, stranding dozens of riders.

NY1 got an exclusive look inside the motor room of the 87-year-old Cyclone roller coaster. The green belt seen above broke during the inaugural run of the season Sunday, leaving dozens of riders stuck 80 feet in the air.

"The belt that we see here behind us, basically, was very brittle," said Valerio Ferrari, president of Central Amusement International. "Due to the cold weather, it slipped off the drum."

As it slipped, it broke. So a new one was put on this week.

NY1 was there as the coaster's mechanics were tested. So were inspectors from the city Department of Buildings. They need to sign off on it before it can run again.

Zamperla's Central Amusement International has operated the landmark ride for the past five years. It said there hasn't been an accident on its watch, and that all riders were evacuated safely in less than seven minutes after the malfunction on opening day.

"We opened one lap bar at a time, and for every person that was coming down, one of our maintenance and operations team was walking with them," Ferrari said. "Only two people at at time, and very, very safely."

Ferrari said walking the track daily is part of the safety routine here. A team member checks for any loose boards on the historic wooden coaster that has nearly 3,000 feet of track. He said they do it in the offseason, too.

"Over the winter, what we do, we go around the track. Every single wooden board, we inspect it," he said.

They also reassemble the coaster cars over the winter months.

Traditionally, Palm Sunday is Coney Island's opening day, whether it's cold or not. For opening day this year, temperatures were in the mid-40s.

Ferrari said the new belt should do the trick going forward, and he hopes for warm conditions and no rain.

Depending on the weather, the Cyclone is scheduled to run all of spring break, from Good Friday through Sunday, April 12. It opens daily starting Memorial Day weekend.
