Several people were injured in a chain reaction crash involving a school bus, rental truck and a fruit store in Queens. NY1’s Ruschell Boone filed this report.

The sight of this accident is shocking, but what is even more stunning is that no one was killed when a rental truck slammed into this fruit store - pinning a woman who was shopping between the stands and the vehicle.

"It was like screech. Boom, boom," one witness described the crash.

A school bus with two dozen children on board was also involved.

"The kids were screaming and crying," said another witness.

Witnesses say the horrific three-car accident sent people running for their lives while others sprang into action to help the victims. Many helped the children off the bus, the woman who was pinned and two women who firefighters say were trapped by debris.

"They were able to get those two older ladies out as well and then the driver that was in there. He was pretty banged up from hitting, I guess, the windshield in the front,” said a witness.

The store owner says that when he saw the store in ruins, all he could say was, “Oh my God.” But he says he is thankful no one was killed.

The driver and the woman were immediately rushed to hospital. Both were conscious at the time. The children were taken to a local store for treatment.

"EMS units and some of our fire units to assess the children. One of those children was immediately transported to LIJ and we had the rest of the children remain in the store," said FDNY chief Mark Ferran.

The fire chief says those children were later transferred to the hospital as a precaution. The truck driver, and the woman who was pinned, had serious injuries.

They were taken to Jamaica Hospital along with the driver of the black car and the school bus. The accident tied up traffic for hours.

"The driver of the black car was not seriously injured as the bus driver. The bus driver was pinned inside his vehicle,” said Ferran.

The accident happened at Hollis Court Boulevard and Hillside Avenue, and many who live here say it is a dangerous intersection. One resident said this was the second accident he remembers happening at this intersection in recent history.

The city says there were four severe injuries here between 2009 and 2013. One involved a pedestrian. Residents fear the next accident will fatal.
