The Staten Island Ferry is getting a boost, with service expansions starting next month.

The mayor and DOT commissioner say six new round trips will be added on the ferry each week, beginning May 1.

The overnight and early-morning additions fall over the weekend, with Saturday adding one, Sunday getting four and early Monday morning getting one. Each departs St. George Ferry Terminal and makes a return trip 30 minutes later.

The extra ferry service is expected to cost the city $700,000 annually.

The mayor says he eventually wants to bring "30-minute service, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."
