Several members of the FDNY were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty.

The eight firefighters were recognized for being bone marrow donors and inducted into the deparment's "Honor Roll of Life."

During the ceremony, 26-year-old firefighter Michael McCauley met the recipient of his life-saving bone marrow donation: 33-year-old army veteran Aaron Faulkner.

In March 2013, Faulkner was diagnosed with leukemia.

Six months later, he received the donation.

"Without Michael I had no hope of seeing my children grow up. A lot of things that people take for granted: high school graduations, riding their bikes. I got to teach my little girl how to walk, see her for her birthday cake,” said Faulkner. “All because someone took a simple swab in their cheek. It's such a little thing but it means so much."
