A local son is celebrating famous faces who hail from Central Queens with a new book. Michael Perlman penned "Legendary Locals of Forest Hills and Rego Park" which pays homage to celebrities like Caroll O'Connor, Carol Channing, Stevie Wonder, Ray Romano and the original punk band The Ramones. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.

What do Captain Kangaroo, The Ramones and talk show host Jerry Springer have in common? They all grew up in Forest Hills, Queens. Forest Hills Native Michael Perlman has written a book spotlighting them and other familiar names from the neighborhood and Rego Park next door.

"I tried fitting in as many notable figures as possible without sacrificing juicy content,” said Perlman.

I met up with the preservationist and writer at the Tower Diner on Queens Boulevard, a stones throw from the Central Queens streets that The Ramones called home and where Stevie Wonder once lived.

Some 200 personalities are featured in the book, like Broadway star Carol Channing, songwriter Burt Bacharach, and Comedian Ray Romano. Forest Hills High graduates Paul Simon and Art Gufunkel are listed. And then there is Carroll O' Connor, a.k.a. Archie Bunker on “All in the Family.”

Archie lived at the fictional address of 704 Hauser Street in Queens. Turns out O'Connor grew up on 112th Street in Forest Hills. Perlman would like the book to spark those who pick it up to do their own investigating of the neighborhood and its people.

"I’m hoping that my readers will feel inspired, become neighborly, gain a greater appreciation for our local history, and preserve sites of cultural interest,” said Perlman.

And perhaps culinary interest too, like the Famous Knish Nosh on 67th Road and Queens Boulevard, a fixture since 1952. Naturally, Michael and I had to nosh.

"I've been having Knishes ever since I opened first my eyes,” he said.

The book includes a certain television reporter for a channel called NY1. Yep, I somehow made the cut right smack on page 121. Not legendary, but definitely local, having grown up on 67th and Austin Street.

"Michael Perlman has a book signing coming up on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Barnes and Noble on Austin Street in of course, Forest Hills.
