A fire at Barnard College forced a dorm to be evacuated overnight.

Flames broke out shortly before 12 a.m. in the basement of the building located at 600 West 116th Street.

The building houses about 200 students.

It was evacuated, along with other buildings on the same block.

"There was the police and they were saying everyone has to evacuate now. There's smoke, this is not a drill, it's real get out," said one witness at the scene.

Firefighters got the flames under control shortly before 1 a.m.

It's not yet clear what sparked the fire.

Residents of the building where the flames broke out have not been let back inside, though residents of the other buildings did return to their rooms.

Students who were displaced were sent to other residential halls.

Barnard says classes will be held on a normal schedule Wednesday.
