St. John's is reaching back into its basketball past as it looks to the future.

It was confirmed late Monday that legendary former player Chris Mullin is in talks to become the next head coach of the Red Storm men's basketball team.

Mullin is St. John's all-time leading scorer, and was a three-time Big East Player of the Year.

He also led the school to its last Final Four appearance back in 1985.

The 51-year-old Brooklyn native spent 16 years playing in the NBA and has worked in the front office of the Warriors and the Kings, but he doesn't have any professional coaching experience.

Some St. John's students who spoke with NY1 say they're not worried.

"That's not a problem. Obama's never been a president before and he's doing a great job. Everybody needs their first chance," said one student.

"Definitely a player and a coach is two different mentalities. Being on the court and setting up plays on the court is two totally different things," said another student.

"When you're a player you know the game, and especially when you're coming back to your old college team, you know the organization somewhat, so it could work out very well," said a third.

Mullin will replace Steve Lavin, who was let go last week after five seasons as the Red Storm's head coach.
