Some urban thrill-seekers made a daring – and illegal – climb to the top of the Triborough/ RFK Bridge, exposing a major security gap at the heavily-used crossing. NY1's Michael Scotto spoke to one of them for the following report.

It's one of the city's busiest bridges, carrying 200,000 vehicles a day, but three dare-devils scaled a Triborough/RFK Bridge tower, 315 feet above the Harlem River without anyone noticing.

They shared their photos with the website AnimalNewYork, showing them atop the bridge and cavorting in a mechanical room there.
One of the climbers spoke with us on the condition we disguise his voice, hide his face and call him by a pseudonym, Alex.

“There's not gonna be any cops around between, you know, 11 and 4 a.m., so even if there are, they're not paying attention, they're tired, they're thinking about their families, they're not thinking about kids goofing around on a bridge,” said Alex.

"I use a lot of names,” he said.

Alex says the group went down a bridge walkway, scaled 40 feet of X beams, and climbed a ladder to the top.

There are some security cameras on the bridge but not a whole lot, plus the climbers were dressed in dark clothes to avoid being caught by police.

“My goal here isn't to embarrass the MTA, embarrass the cops. It really is to shine a good light on them,” Alex said. “I appreciate all the hard work the MTA does and the bridge and tunnel administration does to keep the city running. It's just kind of my way to appreciate it.”

Thrill seekers have annoyed police by climbing One World Trade Center and the Brooklyn Bridge.

The MTA is investigating the latest bridge breach and says it is not amused.

"Anyone who trespasses in non-public areas of MTA property should expect to get arrested, which is still better than getting killed," a spokesman said.

“At this time, we're not concerned about any significant security or terrorist-related issue up there. People just have to learn to stay off those damn bridges, they're dangerous,” said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.

"Alex" says he has climbed other bridges in the city, but has never gotten caught.

More caution, perhaps, but still plenty of risks.
