There's a new safety plan for city Housing Authority buildings.

The mayor and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito say the plan includes new security cameras at 29 developments throughout the city by the end of the year.

Two thousand cameras were installed at 49 developments last year.

"It used to take from the moment the funding was allocated a number of years to get it into construction. But last year, we did that within six months. Whatever funding was allocated in the fiscal year 2014, was actually spent in 2014, and all of the cameras were mounted and installed throughout our 49 developments we did work in," said Farhan Syed, vice president of NYCHA Capital Projects Division.

The City Council provided $17 million for the 2015 fiscal year to ensure the new safety measures will be put in place immediately.

There are currently about 12,000 cameras at NYCHA buildings across the city.
