Senator Charles Schumer is pushing new legislation to prohibit terror suspects from purchasing firearms or explosives.

This comes just days after three Brooklyn men were arrested on charges they plotted to join the Islamic State.

Schumer says between February 2004 and December 2014, individuals on the terrorist watch list cleared a background check in 91 percent of attempted transactions.

This new legislation would allow the Department of Justice to step in and prevent that.

“A person on a terrorist watch list or a no fly list can walk into a gun store and buy guns no questions asked we prohibit felons from buying guns, we prohibit spousal abusers and the mentally ill but we don't prohibit people from terrorist watch lists from buying guns," Schumer said.

Similar legislation was presented in 2007 but failed to pass.

Schumer blames that on pressure from the National Rifle Association.
