Injuries on city playgrounds are costing taxpayers.

A study by City Comptroller Scott Stringer's office says taxpayer money contributed to more than $20 million for injury related judgments and settlements between 2005 and 2014.

Stringer says during that time, 577 playground related injuries were reported, that's an average of one a week.

"The cause of these claims run the gamut, we are talking about improper surfacing, like defective matting. Cracked surfaces and holes in the ground, more than 30 percent of the claims. Insufficient maintenance and defective equipment like swings and slides, and improper playground design,” Stringer said.

Breaking down the numbers: 209 claims were filed in Brooklyn, the most of all of the boroughs, followed by 123 complaints filed in Manhattan.

The most individual injury complaints were filed at Mullally Park in the Bronx and Dr. Ronald E. McNair playground in Manhattan.
