If you are tired of winter weather, a new exhibit in the Bronx may be just the thing to warm your soul. The 13th annual Orchid Show opened this weekend at the New York Botanical Garden.  NY1’s Tara Lynn Wagner stopped by the popular destination to get the story.

Looking to chase away the winter blues? Then head to the Bronx where a tropical paradise is in full bloom.

“It's gorgeous. It’s unbelievable,” said visitor Carol Jacobsen.

The New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show is a perennial favorite, with its dazzling and delicate displays. The flowers are the focus but the environment doesn't hurt.

“You know what? It's a long cold winter and so this gives you a break from it,” said Heidi Sickles of Mamaroneck.

“We love it here and it's the middle of winter and especially this year I need to see flowers,” said Cathy Scibelli of Long Island.

Many people bring their kids but even more bring their cameras, snapping shots of each perfect petal.

“We come every year just to take pictures, it’s gorgeous,” said Lisa Romero of Parkchester.

“Each one is an individual piece of art. They are all unique and beautiful,” said Randy Golden.

The exhibit features thousands of orchids spread out over multiple rooms.  They're in the trees, in the water and above the heads of the crowd, like this massive star shaped chandelier, one of a hundred new hanging elements.

“There's all sorts of chandeliers, living chandeliers, hanging baskets and balls and cones. Juts really wonderful things to see. Even plants that normally grow in the air like the vanda orchids are hanging high and proud,” said Karen Daubman of NYBG.

While the chandeliers inspire visitors to look up, the exhibit also invites them to look down, oddly enough, at their cell phone.

Signs planted throughout the exhibit list numbers to call for more information as well as tips on caring for these exotic plants. Care demonstrations are also held on weekends throughout the show's run and there are adult only evening hours where love has been known to blossom.

“Come on a date and see the orchids in a different way.  The lighting is beautiful and the orchids are more fragrant at night and it's a little bit romantic,” said Daubman.

“I carried them on my wedding day and we'll be married 50 years in April so we came to see the orchids,” said Jacobsen

“It's exotic.  I mean it's different.  I mean I love the flowers here but this is something you can't grow in your own backyard so you treasure it whenever you see it,” said Mary Ann Canapi of the Bronx.
