Going beyond the call of duty, more than a dozen city transit workers were recognized for their extra efforts on the job.

NY1's Pat Kiernan led the tribute as the Daily News saluted 13 workers at its Hometown Heroes in Transit Awards ceremony.

The workers were honored for putting others first and in some cases, saving lives.

Brooklyn bus driver George Smith was honored for his quick thinking when a gunman opened fire on his bus and started shooting a passenger. Smith didn't wait for officers to respond, instead he drove to a nearby police station.

As Smith was telling officers what happened, the shooter and the passenger rolled out of the front door of the bus, still fighting.

NY1 Political Anchor Errol Louis was on hand to hand out a "Heroes" award.

The plaques were handed out in partnership with the MTA and the Transport Workers Union Local 100.
