The city's top police union wants the city to fast-track funding for new bulletproof vests for the NYPD.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito have already thrown their support behind a $7.3-million budget item for the vests in the 2016 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

PBA President Pat Lynch is applauding the move, but said the city has the resources to move even faster than that.

In a statement, Lynch said, in part, "...We have called upon them both to move up the timeline and to purchase this life-saving equipment immediately. We see absolutely no reason to have to wait a half year or more in order to equip our members with the best protection available."
