The roads are a mess this morning after several inches of snowfall overnight.

Staten Islanders were out early to shovel driveways and sidewalks.

The snow turned thicker as it mixed with rain, weighing down some wires and trees.

We asked some New Dorp residents what they thought about the first big snowfall of the season.

"It's a very heavy snow today, with the rain on top of it, it's making it more cumbersome to shovel. We normally take a long time to get plowed so I was impressed to see the plow marks in the street this morning," one man said.

"It's beautiful it's the first time we have snow. No problems yet," said another man.

Crews are using about 2,100 pieces of equipment to keep the roads clear.

Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia says they've made good progress.

"The main roads we think are in pretty good shape. We have actually gotten to many of the side streets. Not 100 percent yet and some of them are going to  need another pass because we went through when it was very heavy snow so there's been more precipitation afterwards. We're going continue to do clean up and mop up through the morning as this all turns over to rain," Garcia said.

Drivers are warned to be careful of slushy and icy conditions on the roads as rain falls.

The Sanitation Department anticipates another one to four inches of snow on the back side of this storm.
