The FDNY will hold a mass to mark the 10th anniversary of Black Sunday—one of the deadliest days in the department's history.

On January 23rd 2005, Lieutenants Curtis Meyran and John Bellew died while responding to a fire in the Bronx.

They became trapped and were forced to jump from a fourth floor window of an apartment to escape the flames.

Investigators later determined the home had been illegally converted.

Lieutenant Joseph DiBernardo also jumped and had to undergo multiple surgeries, but he succumbed to his injuries nearly six years later.

In a separate incident in Brooklyn that day, Firefighter Richard Sclafani died while battling flames in East New York.
