A memorial takes place today in Downtown Brooklyn to honor the life of George Floyd, who was killed at the hands of police in Minneapolis on May 25.

While most of his family will be attending a memorial in Minneapolis, the Brooklyn service is for those who cannot make it and wish to celebrate his life. Floyd’s brother, Terrence, is from Brooklyn and will be taking part in the memorial in New York.

Other family members will also be in attendance in NYC, where Reverend Kevin McCall will lead the vigil at Cadman Plaza Park at 1:00 p.m.

McCall had traveled with brother Terrence Floyd to visit the spot where George had been killed. “He wanted to connect with his spirit,” said McCall.

George Floyd’s death has sparked protests across the city and country demanding justice for his life and fighting police brutality and racism.

While some protests have been peaceful, others have brewed destruction and looting. McCall asks that protesters respect the family’s wishes by continuing to protest peacefully.

“There’s nothing wrong with marching and protesting,” said the reverend. “It’s just that you want to be able to do it peacefully and lift up the name of George Floyd.”

At the close of the memorial, attendees will be marching over the Brooklyn Bridge, ending at Foley Square.
