Transgender New Yorkers now have new health care protections.

Governor Cuomo says insurers cannot deny coverage claims for services not usually given to certain genders.

For example, a person assigned male at birth but who identifies as female cannot be denied a prostate cancer screening.

The move is the latest step by Cuomo to protect health insurance coverage for transgender individuals.

In 2014, Cuomo ordered insurers to cover gender reassignment surgery, hormone therapy and other gender transition treatments.

And last year, he issued a change in Medicaid to cover operations for transgender youths.
