The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is set to kick off a new anti-smoking campaign.

It will feature a series of ads with real people who are dealing with the long-term health problems associated with smoking.

Called "Tips from former Smokers" it will begin airing on January 25 and continue for 20 weeks.

The CDC says nearly 480,000 Americans die each year from the effects of tobacco. The Agency's Director, Thomas Frieden says the more they run these ads, the more people will attempt to quit.

"Hard-hitting ads like these help people quit, that's what we saw in New York City, we've now taken that nationally," Frieden said. "The more we run these ads, and the more places like New York City run ads like these or others, the more smokers quit, the more people live longer and the lower are health care costs."

Frieden says the tobacco industry is spending $1 million an hour marketing their product, which according to the CDC outspends their ad campaign in 3 days.
