This was one of 200 events held across the country recently to promote a switch to electric cars, something many people already see happening.

"It’s not an anomaly," electric car owner Eric Cote said. "It’s not a small piece of the market. It’s actually going to grow a lot and be the next big advancement in vehicles today."

"Even though gas prices have come down a lot in the last year or so sales of these cars have gone up by about 20 percent this year compared to last year," said Chris Carrick, Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board.

It has a lot of benefits. It’s certainly has lower operating costs and you still have great performance like instant torque and fast acceleration so it’s a step up from what the traditional vehicle offers while at the same time you’re saving on gas, oil, maintenance and brake issues

There are about 14,000 electric cars in New York state and a growing number of recharging stations.

"The biggest benefit is environmental," Carrick said. "They have no emissions and because our electricity is fairly clean in New York charging your car is a clean way to go."

There were at least six different models on display at this show and the number of electric vehicle models is expected to grow.

"There are newer cars coming out that have a lower price and a longer range on their battery so we’re expecting sales to continue growing," Carrick said.
