Next year’s Met Gala will honor a single living designer — for the first time since 1983.

Met officials say the annual May Gala and accompanying exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute will be dedicated to Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, displaying 120 of her designs.

They say the Japanese designer is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years.

Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams will co-chair the highly-anticipated fashion event  with Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

The last living designer the Met honored was Yves Saint Laurent.
