More high school seniors are looking to CUNY schools for higher education, now that it's a lot cheaper for certain students.

The City University of New York said more than 36,000 low income students filled out CUNY applications without paying the $65 fee.

That is five times more than those who used fee waivers to apply in previous years.

The fee elimination was expanded last year to help more people get into college.

City officials said it helped families save more than $2 million in application fees.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Excelsior program, which began earlier this month, offers free tuition to CUNY and SUNY students whose families make less than $125,000 a year.
