The city is hoping to make public schools safer for students through single-stall restrooms.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña announced today that by 2018 all city schools will have a single-stall bathroom.

Officials say the initiative is part of the DOE's efforts to ensure bathroom access for all students, regardless of the gender identity they align with.

In a statement, the First Lady of NYC said the new spaces will help create a healthy learning environment saying.

"This initiative should serve as a reminder that the needs of all students deserve to be met — in the absence of a distractive bathroom experience that can impede academic achievement. We will continue to find ways to enhance NYC schools to make it possible for students to thrive in dignity and reach their full potential."

The facilities will service grades 6 through 12.

They will not require special permission or medical documentation.
