A struggling junior high school in the Bronx will close its doors for good after this school year.

Parents and students at Junior High School 162 Lola Rodríguez de Tió in Mott Haven were notified that the school will shut down.

J.H.S. 162 failed to make the grade after it was put on the state's shortlist of schools that needed to make big improvements on grades within 12 months.

In October, the state gave the city's education department a decision - merge the school or close it entirely.

Eighth graders at the middle school will still graduate, while sixth and seventh graders can transfer to five other schools in the district, including a new STEM-focused middle school that will open in the same building.

The city's Education Department released a statement saying it will work with parents through the transition, and that an independent monitor will oversee the process.
