A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to school.

It happened at the Urban Assembly Maker Academy, which is one of four schools inside the Murray Bergtraum Educational Campus in Lower Manhattan.

According to officials, school safety agents say they smelled marijuana coming from the student's backpack. Authorities say the agents searched the bag and found the drug and a loaded handgun.

Students NY1 spoke with say they're concerned about security.

"I'm surprised that they don't have metal detectors. If they did, I think this wouldn't have happened in the first place," said one student.

"I feel unsafe because that's my life. We don't know who he was going to shoot," said another. "They need to start checking, yeah, some scanners in here."

Officials say the student is in the 11th grade and started at the school just this week.
