State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is looking into whether Donald Trump’s charity is breaking the law.

That’s what a person familiar with the matter tells NY1 — basing the inquiry on "troubling transactions that have recently come to light."

Recent media reports, particularly in the Washington Post, say Trump has not given money recently to his self-named foundation, and also allege he spent funds earmarked for charity to buy a 6-foot tall painting of himself.

It’s also been reported that Trump was recently fined by the IRS for donating to the Florida Attorney General.

The Florida AG ultimately did not join a fraud case against Trump University that Schneiderman has led.

"My interest in this issue is really in my capacity as regulator of non-profits in New York state," Schneiderman said. "We have been looking into the Trump Foundation and make sure it's compliant with the laws that govern charities in New York."

Trump's campaign issued a statement in response, reading in part:

"Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is a partisan hack who has turned a blind eye to the Clinton Foundation for years and has endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. This is nothing more than another left-wing hit job designed to distract from Crooked Hillary Clinton’s disastrous week."
