Former New York Governor George Pataki says he's endorsing John Kasich for the Republican nomination for president ahead of next week's primary.

Pataki's support of the Ohio governor comes a day after Kasich received the endorsement of the Daily News' editorial board.

Pataki says Kasich can bring Americans together.

"As a Republican, we need to win this race, and Governor Kasich is the only one who right now not just beats Hillary Clinton, he trounces Hillary Clinton, and he will win this race if he gets the nomination of the Republican Party," Pataki said.

"He's going to command a lot of respect because he is respected by people all across the country because of his success in running New York," Kasich said.

Earlier this year, Pataki endorsed Marco Rubio after ending his own run for president.

Kasich will spend his day Friday campaigning upstate.
